Webasto to set up sunroof factory in India
German car parts manufacturer, Webasto, is all set to open a factory in Pune, India, to manufacture sunroofs. With an investment of Rs 250 crore, the auto parts manufacturer aims to capitalise on the recovering automotive market in India by manufacturing sunroofs for models on sale in India as well as for exports. Webasto will also set up a testing centre here with the aim of introducing technologies as well as in-house projects.
Commenting on the latest development, Vikas Prasad, president & MD of Webasto India, said “Webasto has been located in the Pune region for around a decade. With the new facility, we are extending our capacity to manufacture roof systems while also establishing a testing centre in the country.”
The company official also stated that “From 2021, Webasto India will manufacture roofs for some recently-acquired Indian projects at the new plant. New projects will also be serviced by the same facility.” This factory expansion and a new facility will generate more employment opportunities.
Joerg Sandmann, president of the company’s Asia-Pacific region, said the new investments would be completed over the next three years, adding that the company plans to introduce new technologies and innovative products in roofing systems.
The German company offers different types of roofs, including panoramic and fixed glass units. The in house production of sunroofs and the growth of related technologies could result in the feature being offered as an economical aftermarket add-on.
