Indian multinational ride-sharing company Ola will soon launch its electric scooter in India. The company has revealed that the upcoming new e-scooter will go on sale sometime in July 2021. Ola electric has recently revealed the network of fast chargers called ‘Hypercharger’. It will be the widest electric two-wheeler charging network in the world. The company aims to set up over 100K plus charging points across 400 cities in the first year alone.
World’s Largest E-Scooter Manufacturing Facility
In December 2020, the company had announced an Rs. 2400 crore investment for setting up its first electric scooter factory in the state of Tamil Nadu (India). Upon completion, the factory will create nearly 10000 job opportunities and will be the world’s largest electric scooter manufacturing facility that will initially have an annual capacity of 2 million units. In the first year, the company is setting up over 5000 charging points across 100 cities in the country.
According to the company, the Ola e-scooter can charge up to 50% in 18 minutes. This will give the electric scooter a riding range of around 75 km. A simple mathematical calculation indicates the fact that the Ola e-scooter could feature a max riding range of up to 150 km on a single battery charge. Ola electric also said that a 0 to 100% charge for the electric scooter would take around 60 minutes.
Ola Chairman and Group CEO Bhavish Aggarwal said that the sale of the electric scooter is scheduled to start in July 2021, right after the plant’s completion. “To get adoption of electric vehicles, a strong charging network is required. Today, one of the key infrastructure gaps in India is the charging network. Our Hypercharger Network will be the largest fast-charging network for two-wheelers,” he explained.
These e-vehicle charging stations will be deployed as stand-alone towers as well as in popular locations such as malls, IT parks, office complexes, and cafes to ensure that Ola Electric customers always have a charging facility nearby. The Ola Hypercharger network is being built by the company along with partners. The ola electric vehicle Customers will be able to monitor the charging progress in real-time on the Ola Electric app and seamlessly pay for the charging through the app as well.
The Ola electric Scooter will include a home charger that will require no additional installation and will allow customers to charge their scooter at home by plugging into a regular wall socket for charging.
The launch of the e-scooter is in line with Ola’s global vision of moving mobility into a more sustainable, accessible, and connected future. The company is yet to disclose details like the pricing of the electric-scooter, it could very well be in the range of around 1 lakh. This will pit the vehicle against its other segment rivals in the country. The company could also decide to offer the e-scooter in multiple variants at the time of launch.
