New-Gen BMW M4 Competition Convertible Revealed
German luxury car manufacturer BMW has revealed the Convertible body style of the new-gen M4 Competition. Slated for sale alongside the 2-door coupe, it brings a host of firsts to the M4 convertible, as well as boasts quite a few improvements when compared to its previous model.
2022 BMW M4 Competition Convertible: Design
The exterior design of the new-generation BMW M4 Competition Convertible includes the signature large, vertical, frameless BMW kidney grille (which stirs up controversial opinions) in an M-specific design at the centre, contoured wheel arches, distinctive M side gills, large cooling air intakes, quad-exhaust integrated into an M-specific diffuser. The full-LED headlights with U-shaped DRL elements are fitted as standard. The new model comes with a stretched silhouette and a new soft top concept with a panel bow that benefits from a retractable hardtop with a fabric hood. The carmaker says the soft top is 40% lighter than the predecessor’s roof and comes with 80L of added storage space in the boot. The soft top can be opened or closed in 18 sec, even when moving, courtesy of its electric drive mechanism.
The new-generation model has grown by 122mm in length over the model it replaces and now stretches to 4790mm. Its wheelbase has grown by 45mm to 2857mm and its width of 1887mm adds 17mm to that of its predecessor and 40mm to the new BMW 4 Series Convertible. The new-gen BMW M4 Competition Convertible measures 1395mm in height with the soft top closed. The new model comes with M light-alloy wheels measuring 19-inches at the front and 20-inches at the rear.
The interior of the new-gen model carries forward a gloss-black cabin with M-specific details such as M-specific controls, M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, heated M Sport seats, an illuminated “M4” logo on the headrest. The inside of the 2022 BMW M4 Competition Convertible is inspired by a racing car and is smartly styled with 4 individual seats that can be individually customized according to the buyers’ preference, by opting for heated M Carbon bucket seats with full electric adjustment. The open-top four-seater M4 also gets a 10.1-inch infotainment display as standard too, along with a 12.3-inch digital driver display in place of traditional dials and gauges.
2022 BMW M4 Competition Convertible: Powertrain
The new-generation BMW M4 Competition Convertible is powered by a 3.0-litre in-line 6-cylinder gasoline twin turbo engine that is capable of producing 510bhp and 650 Nm of max torque. The engine is mated to an eight-speed M Steptronic Gearbox. It send the engine’s power to all four wheels, which enables the vehicle to do the zero to 100 kmph sprint in 3.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 280 kmph (with the optional M Driver’s pack)
Chassis and Suspension
Being a performance model, the BMW M4 convertible competition gets its own chassis setup, adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers to deliver optimum road contact, M Servotronic steering with variable ratio, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, maximum traction, and high comfort levels over long distances.
