Ciaz-based Toyota Belta to replace Yaris Sedan in India
Toyota Motor Corporation has stopped the production of its Yaris sedan in India. While some dealers say the company still has stock of the Yaris Sedan and will continue to sell it for the next few months, the focus will soon shift to the larger and better value for money Ciaz-based Toyota Belta. Nothing but a rebadged Maruti Ciaz, the Toyota Belta is expected to hit showrooms towards the middle of August. Like other Maruti-based Toyotas, it should be a strong seller for the carmaker.
Why Toyota Yaris Sedan Production has stopped?
The Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer could phase out the Yaris sedan from India due to its low monthly sales. The Yaris sedan was never really the right rival for the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, or the value for money Maruti Ciaz. It wasn’t as spacious, lacked some important features, was priced a bit high and as a result, the Yaris didn’t find many takers. As a result, Yaris sales which peaked this year at 871 units in March has struggled to go beyond three figures a month. The other reason the Yaris will be discontinued is to make space on the assembly line for Maruti and Toyota’s Creta fighter, a Sports utility vehicle both companies are pinning their hopes on. And then there are other Toyota-based products that both carmakers are likely to make in Toyota’s plant number 2, in the place of the Yaris Sedan.
Toyota Belta: Powertrain
Tew Toyota Belta will borrow all the specifications, features and powertrain options from the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The Toyota version of the Ciaz will be powered by the same 1.5-litre K-Series engine with the company’s (SVHS) Smart Hybrid Vehicle from Suzuki mild-hybrid technology that is capable of producing 104bhp and 138Nm of max torque. The engine comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque-converter automatic transmission (AT).
Toyota Belta: Exterior and Interior Features
The Toyota Belta will also borrow its features from the Ciaz. The exterior and interior feature list includes projector headlamps, LED taillights, alloy wheels, a chrome-finished window line, touchscreen infotainment system that supports wifi smartphone connectivity such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a semi-digital instrument cluster, a multifunction steering wheel with mounted controls, climate control, cruise control, multiple airbags, and more.
