All-New Hyundai Kona N Revealed -The True Hot SUV
South Korean multinational automotive manufacturer Hyundai has unveiled the 2021 Kona N, the sporty, performance version of the popular compact SUV from the carmaker. The SUV in the N avatar looks more sporty with a whole lot of updates in design, technical and mechanical aspects. The SUV is the fifth Hyundai to gain a sporty N-badged variant – after the i20, i30, i30 Fastback, and Veloster hatchbacks – and arrives as the company announces its plan to expand its N and N-Line range to eighteen models by the end of the year 2022.
2021 Hyundai Kona N: Powertrain and Performance
The Kona N is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged GDI petrol engine that develops 290 hp and 392 Nm of maximum torque, allowing the SUV to go from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.5 seconds. The gearbox is an eight-speed wet-dual-clutch automatic unit that can be tweaked to have two power outputs.
The top speed of Kona N is 240 km/h and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds when Launch Control is activated. The new Kona N model offers five driving modes (Eco, Normal, Sport, N, and Custom) along with three high-performance functions, namely N Power Shift, N Grin Shift and N Track Sense Shift. The N Power Shift system allows obtaining a maximum thrust for 20 sec, at the end of which it requires a wait of 40 sec for it to be reactivated. The N Grin Shift function intervenes on the gearbox reducing the loss of torque to a minimum to avoid dragging. Finally, the N Track Sense Shift function, designed for driving on the track, automatically recognizes the driving style and acts accordingly on the gearbox to set the gear according to the drive situation.
2021 Hyundai Kona N: Styling
Kona N is not only the latest addition to Hyundai’s growing high-performance N lineup but is also the first N model with Sports utility vehicle body style. Some of Kona N’s design highlights include the “shark nose” complemented by large air openings, aerodynamic lower grille, front grille with dedicated mesh design and N logos dotted around the interior, double-wind roof spoiler, triangular third brake light, a large diffuser and red accent line, and two large exhaust mufflers. Its lightweight 19″ forged alloy wheels add more to its sporty appearance.
2021 Hyundai Kona N: Features
The all-new Kona N is equipped with new 10-inch infotainment and digital cluster system. When the driver selects N mode or Sport mode, the touchscreen and digital displays show lap times, circuit maps, and other important information in a video game-like format. There are also N logos dotted around the interior, like on the gear shift, hand brake, door scuff, and seats. The new SUV model also get launch control feature, the multimode gearbox, and variable exhaust valves as standard.
