5-Door Mahindra Thar Road Test is about to begin In India

Mahindra & Mahindra is all set to test its much-awaited five-door variant of its Thar. In all likelihood, the manufacturer could disguise the 5-door Thar variant as Mahindra Bolero for road tests, according to a media report. The SUV has received a green signal from Mahindra’s board of directors. The pre-production prototype testing is expected to begin soon in the country with Bolero’s body. The Mahindra’s Thar 5-door version will directly rival Maruti Suzuki Jimny in the Indian market when it launches by the end of this year. The length and wheelbase of the upcoming 5-door SUV will be more than the standard 3-door version of the Thar.

Mahindra Thar Design

The Mahindra 5-door Thar is expected to be based on the same GEN3 ladder-frame architecture as the 3-door version that is currently on sale. The styling of the SUV is also expected to be identical, save for the addition of two new doors. The front fascia will flaunt the same signature 6-slat grille, retro-styled circular headlamps with LED daytime running lights and raised fenders. The cabin space will be increased due to the longer wheelbase which will be beneficial for the rear seat passengers. The backseat will comfortably accommodate three adults. As for features, it will retain the same features as the 3-door version in the form of automatic climate control, cruise control and touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto.

Powertrain – Petrol and Diesel Engine

The reports said that the 5-door SUV will have a petrol and diesel engine, carried over from the 3-door version. There will be a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit along with a 2.2L 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine at the helm of affairs. The former makes peak power of 152bhp and max torque of 300Nm while the latter develops peak power output of 132bhp and peak torque delivery of 300Nm. Both these motors can be availed with both 6-speed manual transmission (MT) and 6-speed automatic transmission options. Needless to say, a 4×4 drive system will also be offered as standard. Reports also suggest that the Mahindra Thar (3-door) will receive a new 180m Stallion Pro turbo Gasoline engine that will be more powerful and faster than the existing petrol unit. The same powertrain might also be offered on the upcoming 5-door SUV.
